WK45 Cigars: Sometimes less is more

Once again, life got in the way of my cigar smoking, but that didn’t stop me from making the most of what I did smoke. Unfortunately my cigars didn’t always have the same idea.

8th November 2021 – Oliva Serie G Robusto

Another Monday and it was another live show on Instagram. This time our main guest was Rosalie Barber from James Barber Tobacconist. We chatted about our journeys through the cigar world and the upcoming Doscientos event that Barbers are hosting.

The conversation did distract me a little from the cigar, but I got notes of sweet apple, cocoa, creamy bay leaf, coffee and marshmallow from the Oliva Serie G Robusto.

13th November 2021 – Casa Turrent 1880 Series Double Claro

This was cigar of the month for Cigar Club LDN back in May of this year. I had been putting off smoking it until I could do a proper review of it, which will be coming shortly to both this website and my YouTube channel.

14th November 2021 – Room 101 Farce Maduro Corona Papi

My final cigar of this week was a small one whose size makes it the ideal winter smoke. The maduro wrapper looked appetising and with a long and productive week behind me, I was looking forward to a good quality smoke.

Aromas of toffee, hay and mallow urged me to cut and light the cigar, and I was greeted by bacon, hibiscus and walnut on my first draws. It wasn’t long before a warming cedar bonfire joined the flavour party. As I hit the middle third, the bacon notes morphed into grilled gammon and eggs with a generous drizzle of truffle oil. Unfortunately, this is where the waxing lyrical ends.

Almost exactly as I hit the final third, I got a mouthful of tar and slurry. Looking at the head, I couldn’t see any heavy blackening, but I did notice a couple of hard points as I ran my finger over the cut. Carefully getting hold of them, I pulled and removed not one or two, but five thick veins of tobacco that had made their way through quality control and into my cigar. Once extracted, the remainder of the cigar was unsmokable as little other than the binder and wrapper remained.
