Macanudo Inspirado Black Robusto Review: Beautiful Smoke from a Magnificent Cigar
The first thing that struck me about this Macanudo Inspirado Black Robusto was the super dark colour of the wrapper. Now I’m talking about 90% cocoa chocolate or a rich peaty soil. The name of this cigar doesn’t lie. The wrapper is black. It’s closer to a shade of coal than the typical Colorado brown I am accustomed to smoking. That being said, the smell was still familiar. My nose was tantalised by aromas of cocoa and sweet cedar as I lifted the cigar from my humidor and the cold draw, which left a moisturising oil on my lips, reminded me of fresh, hot buttered toast at breakfast.
Kicking things off, the first third of the Macanudo Inspirado Black Robusto matched the cold draw for flavours. The breakfast toast was very quickly joined by notes of unsweetened caffe mocha. Towards the end of the first third, a sweet cedar began to appear as the cocoa flavours started to take precedence.
The lure of this cigar came as the ash grew. Just like a classic Marlene Dietrich film, this cigar became a beautiful picture of black and white, lit from within by a glowing red ember that revealed subtle shades of grey hidden within the nicely forming ash. Alas, the burn wasn’t quite as even as I would have liked, but this did not detract from the allure of the cigar.
As I reached the middle of the Macanudo Inspirado Black Robusto, the rich, sweet coffee was joined by allspice and cream, giving an overall palate of luscious tiramisu. Having finished my espresso coffee, I grabbed the bottle of Glayva and poured a rather generous glass to enjoy with the last third.
Into the final third, I noticed that I needed to take a lot more care of the cigar than I had up to this point. If I drew too often, the cigar would hotbox and get rather harsh. Not often enough and it would burn out. When I got it just right though, the flavours were sumptuous and it felt amazing.
